Exhibitions:
22 April - 26 June 2011
Fruitmarket Gallery, EdinburghThe exhibition Narcissus Reflected. Myth and Artistic Identity in Twentieth-Century Art, curated by David Lomas and Dawn Ades, displayed works by a number of modern and contemporary artists who investigated the ancient myth of Narcissus in relation to the artist's creative and sexual identities.
Narcissus Reflected included important works of twentieth-century art, such as Salvador Dalí's painting Metamorphosis of Narcissus (1937, Tate Modern); Jess's large collage drawing Narkissos (1976-1991, SFMOMA); Yayoi Kusama's installation Narcissus Garden (first exhibited at the Venice Biennale of 1966) and Pipilotti Rist's video Sip My Ocean (1996).
A fascinating show making manifest a tendency in modern art that you'd always known was there without ever quite getting around to seeing. So see it.’ Charles Darwent, The Independent.
Conferences & Symposia:
Friday 13th May 2011
Tate ModernThe Centre's 2011 PhD symposium took place at Tate Modern in conjunction with the exhibition Joan Miró. The Ladder of Escape (14 April - 11 September 2011). Postgraguate students from the UK, France, Germany and the US working in a range of humanistic disciplines that comprise art history, musicology and philosophy presented papers on a variety of topics relating to the history and reception of surrealism. Their works stimulated a lively discussion within an audience of young researchers and established scholars. The symposium concluded with a roundtable discussion on the Miró exhibition with curators Marko Daniel and Matthew Gale.
