The majority of articles in this issue are adapted from papers given at the ‘Surrealism and Non-Normative Sexualities’ panel at the AAH Conference, Manchester, April 2-4 2009. The issue has been edited by James Boaden, in collaboration with Joanna Pawlik and Silvia Loreti. It represents scholarship which addresses the aims of the Centre for the Study of Surrealism and its Legacies’ current project exploring surrealism and queer sexualities. The project seeks to uncover interaction between surrealism and non-normative sexualities, practices and identities which have been marginalised by surrealism and by surrealism studies itself. Articles in this issue raise a number of different ways in which the assumed heteronormativity of surrealism has been challenged by queer artists, writers, and photographers throughout the movement’s history. Through the encounter of surrealism with queer cultural production and queer theory, the issue provides an important fresh perspective on our understanding of surrealism, its geographic dispersal and its legacies.
Papers of Surrealism is a web-based journal produced by the Centre for the Study of Surrealism and its Legacies. The journal welcomes a diversity of opinions and approaches and seeks to represent the breadth of academic disciplines engaged in the study of surrealism. It publishes original scholarly articles, translations, interviews, book and exhibition reviews as well as news and commentary. While principally serving the academic community, and subject to peer review, material published by Papers of Surrealism is intended to be accessible to interested non-specialist readers. The opinions expressed in this journal are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the editors.
